Ulidavaru Kandante
The story is set in the 90's in a small fishing town on the Arabian Coast, 6 km to the west of the temple town, Udupi. Tiger dance in the Janmaashtami day seen in the trailer has now become the talk of the town. The songs have a classy feel. It reflects the culture and the ethos of our land and hence it has picked up with the listeners very quickly. The movie is full of dots. You connect the dot you get the story, even if you don't connect you still get the story as the movie is all about perception. UK movie is to be screened in international film festivals too.

Sandalwood industry is waiting for the release of experimental movie Ulidavaru Kandanthe. The film is already believed to make a difference in Kannada film industry. The trailer and the music is a massive hit. It is directed by Rakshit Shetty, starring Rakshit, Kishore, Tara, Sheethal, Yagna and more. Trailer was released on December 6th and incredibly it got more than 2 lakh viewers. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POJ_6EtGeMw) The phrase ‘shoot maadbeka’ (do you want to be shot?) in the trailer is now the hot talk among the youth. He wants the trailer to be engaging and hence he made the trailer a bit long. It runs for four minutes in social media and in theatres for about two and a half minute. Rakshit reveals that the movie deals with five stories that are interwoven. It is connected to one incident that happens on Sri Krishna Janmashtami day in Udupi during the early 1990s and the repercussions that follow that particular incident. Rakshit takes the social responsibility of highlighting Karnataka’s dialect, culture and flavor which lacks in mainstream Kannada movies. It is much noted for the Kundapura Kannada dialogs. In the trailer we could see the tiger dance during Janmashtami day in Udupi. He says one of the characters is a guy who paints himself like a tiger and the whole story revolves around him. The film has a classic touch which paves way for symbolic interpretations. All the five stories have been shot with different tones and in different styles. Yet, the uniformity is maintained! This movie also gets the credit of using Sync sound for the first time in Kannada movie. Sounds for all the songs have been designed by Renjith Vishwwanathan.Vijay Prakash gets an intriguing, harmonium-dominated tune in Male marethu, while his other solo, Gaatiyailidu is almost like Ilayaraja’s composition in its gorgeous tune, rhythm and sweeping violins. Paper paper has a charming groove and is passionately sung by a group of kids. The title song is on similar lines, with a simple, hummable tune. ShreyaGhoshal is at her best inKaakigbanna, while Ajaneesh unleashes a delirious mix of instruments.Kannamunche has an engaging tune sung really well by Shankar Mahadevan, well supported by VaaniHarikrishna, it has a lovely classical ending. One cannot miss to appreciate the mesmerizing lyrics of the album. Lyrics are penned by Suni, VigneshwarVishwa, ManojavaGalgali and Rakshit Shetty.Thesongs too reflect the culture and ethos of Karnataka. The credit goes to AjaneeshLoknath and his team. The popular T V anchor Sheethal plays the role of a Journalist for a national newspaper, who sets out to investigate an incident. As she writes about the incident, the story takes a drastic twist. She says she is happy being a part of experimental cinema. Rakshith has taken the initiative to bring back the great actress Tara, who was neglected by the industry for long period. UK will definetly take Rakshit Shetty into the big league of Kannada film makers. Film remake rights are in huge demand. There was always an audience for good cinema in Karnataka. They have been neglected for a long time. But now things are looking bright for Kannada cinema with movies like Lucia and Jatta. UlidavaruKandanthewill be an unforgettable and grand feast for movie lovers. Rakshit promises to take this movie to the prestigious Cannes film festival!

Part 2 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante How have been women treated in this movie? As you know, the story is set in the 90’s in a small fishing town on the Arabian Coast, 6 km to the west of the temple town, Udupi. Most of them were housewives. I did not bring any of my subjective views. We met a lot of fisherwoman and got to know about their lifestyle. We have brought their lives visually. Yagna and Tara have played the local women characters. However Sheethal plays the role of a journalist and she is bit ahead of her time. I think there are women of different kind in this movie. You will not be able to tag the women characters of my movie under any label. For the first time in the history of Kannada Cinema, UK is all set to be released in 5 AMC theatres across the United States on 30 March 2014. Book your tickets at http://reelbox.tv/uk

Part 1 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante How did you choose the characters? Have you decided them even when you were scripting Well, I spent two years for the script. I visually scripted it, I scripted the first half in just two weeks and the rest took its own time. Some of the characters bloomed in my mind when scripting. While others I have to go in search after scripting and you wouldn’t believe that I extended the story and made changes as to suit the character. Each of them has perfectly fit into the roles and what makes me feel good is that all of them were happy about their character. Part 6 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante What have you re-defined in this movie? I actually never attempted to re- define anything and that wasn’t my idea of this film. I just took courage to do experiment. I have explored what has been neglected by the Kannada industry. There is still much more to explore. If this works out, this will be a path breaking movie for making new explorations. I believe this will give hope to new directors to explore and make a difference. They have to expand the market of Kannada movie and should not restrict themselves to Karnataka alone. Experimental movies should be released atleast 10-12 every year. I think we all should explore together. Part 3 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante Which part of the movie is so close to your heart? The whole movie is such a memorable event in my life. I enjoyed every aspect about it. However Tiger dance, which you must have seen in the trailer, is personally close to me, because it was my dream. I always yearned to paint myself like a tiger and dance. My friends and I have tried a lot in our childhood days to take part in tiger dance but it never happened. I was brought up in Udupi, and Janmaashtami is always the most waited day for all of us every year. I once had a chance for tiger dance in my college cultural. But that was different. The real mood and emotion is brought out. I’m sure that it will be a great experience for the viewers too. Part 4 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante Songs, most of the time it is deliberately included in the film, do you think it is an inevitable element? Not necessarily. The thing is that we have adapted to a kind of narrative style where songs play important role. We are expecting for it. I personally believe that music is a powerful expression. What I could explain in 15 minutes can be told in 5minutes through music. Of course the lyric has to be magical. In UK, songs come along with the story, it is not something deliberately planned. If you miss the song, you will miss something important in the film. UK Songs have come as background scores. If we could tell something in few minutes without losing the intensity, without the help of songs, then we can make an attempt. Part 7 of exclusive interview with Rakshit Shetty, Director of Ulidavaru Kandante There has been a lot of competition to get the remake rights of UK from other regional language directors, do you think the originality will be affected in the remake or what compromise it has to make in the remake? As I said before UK is a universal movie and it is a movie to all languages. Tiger dance is quite common, you can see in Tamil Nadu, Kerala too. It can be perceived by everyone. May be in Hindi, they might change the backdrop to Bombay. But I would say, whatever the language maybe we could still retain Udupi as backdrop and go ahead. I’m happy that Kannada films have now caught the eyes of other regional directors and it is a very good sign. The musical hit album of Ulidavaru Kandante was launched on Feb 10th by the Hatrick Hero Shivrajkumar. Right after the launch, the songs have become the favorite picks of all. The album stands unique and to name the genre is indeed a tough task! GaatiyaIlidu is the now the popular ringtone! It reminds us of Illayaraja’s composition. Ajaneesh Loknath has done a remarkable work and has set new standards for music. Both the critics and the audience say that UK album is fresh and first of its kind in Kannada industry. It is not just the composition but the programming, selection of voices and arrangement. Ajaneesh seems to have enjoyed working for the background music too. He has composed each theme of the story with different style. As the movie is set in 80’s and early 90’s it was challenging for him. Rakshit says, ‘’If there is heaven on earth then I just got the feel of it watching Tara Madam's performance on Ajaneesh Loknath Music’’. The songs echo the culture of Kannada. This movie is the first in Kannada film industry to have used Sync sound and the movie has been shot in live sounds. Sounds for all the songs have been designed by Renjith Vishwwanathan.
